This picture is incredibly humbling: we are just everyday people with a few seeds and water. This Chinese Forget Me Not flower that was gifted to us last year, has returned this year. So, without a doubt we can confirm that this flower is a perennial. We began gardening for the first time last year and probably have not planted anything since before we could read and write. So, last year was a huge learning as well as trail and error period. Needless to say we learned alot. When anything grew we were so pleased. Even more pleasing is the fact that one of our flowers has begun to return.
We begun pest control, which we will discuss in the next article, and put her out as a test. We expected the pests to come out in droves to attack her. But, thus far instead she has begun to bloom. Now different pests are attracted to different plants. It would seem that the fruit bearing plants attract the most pests, so perhaps she is not the best test. We brought our parsley plant in from last season and she is still yielding delicious leaves inside with little light and a few ice cubes a week. Protest was raised when we considered her as the sacrificial plant, so she is still inside yielding her leaves.
Last year one of the major ways we organically addressed pests was with a homemade organic neem oil and hot water solution, which we defensed in our garden fairly quickly with this simple hand garden pump. It saved us alot of time and seemed to be fairly effective for several pests. 100% neem oil and making your own solution will save you money and this hand pump garden sprayer will save you a tremendous amount of time. Try it and tell us what you think.
How have you begun to prepare for pests? Have you already planted? What did you plant?
