BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Berkeley County announced Wednesday they've received over $1,244,050.95 as their part of $26 billion national opioid settlement.
The county said they plan to distribute the money to local organizations and agencies helping to fight the opioid epidemic locally.
Organizations that want to apply to receive funds can do so on Berkeley County's website from 8 a.m. Friday, May 31 through Friday, June 14.
Money from the settlement must be used for one or more of the following:
Naloxone or Other FDA-Approved Drug to Reverse Opioid Overdoses;
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Distribution and Other Opioid-Related Treatment;
Pregnant and Postpartum Women;
Expanding Treatment for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS);
Expansion of Warm Handoff Programs and Recovery Services;
Treatment for Incarcerated Population;
Prevention Programs;
Expanding Syringe Service Programs; and
Evidence-Based Data Collection and Research Analyzing the Effectiveness of the Abatement Strategies within the State.
The Palmetto State is set to receive over $360 million over the next 18 as part of the settlement from manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies involved in the opioid process.
Berkeley County is still awaiting approval from the state before distributing funds from the stettlement.
