Pears from Argentina will be shipped to world markets of Asia and the Middle East, North America, Europe and LATAM from January 2023. According to Damian Zetone, Sales Director at Fruit World S.A. in Argentina: “Early signals from the markets are showing interest in William´s, Beurre D´Anjou and Packham´s pears. Currently we are having conversations with multiple clients with the aim to reach program agreements for the season. Our goal is to expand our client’s portfolio, but always guaranteeing a high quality product, in the short term we expect to harvest excellent products for the 2023 season.” He hopes the Argentinian pear and apple sector will have a better season after challenges during the past 2022 season. “The 2022 pear season was more complex than expected, the war together with shipping fee increases highly affected the business worldwide. Due to that scenario, we proceeded to change our course and the volume was mainly absorbed by LATAM, Israel, Singapore, North America and other specific markets in Europe that were not so affected. Nonetheless, the company was able to carry out our business plan without much pain due to its high quality products and stock control. We believe that owning a high quality product helps to make the difference in order to face any contingency. For the 2023 season we expect to expand our business across different regions, but mainly focused in North America and Asia where we see there is space to grow,” explains Zetone. Fruit World manages the brands Don Elias and Los Andes. Fruit World S.A. is boutique company based in the high valley of Rio Negro, Patagonia, Argentina. The company owns the entire end-to-end production process, meaning the fruit is produced and grows in their own local orchards. After harvesting the fruit is packed at their own packing house facilities.

“The enterprise is well-known due to its vast commercial experience, since it happened to be one of the greatest exporters of pears and apples across the globe for a long period of time. Owning the entire production process in-house allows us to ensure reaching the best quality of our products, and full control over them. Currently the production is mainly composed of pears (80%) and apples (20%), which are exported to multiple destinies across the world and sold through our brands Don Elias and Los Andes. Don Elias is the name of one of the pioneers in the production of pears in Argentina, Don Elias Zetone, who passionately dedicated his life to the development of his noble fruit in the country. Los Andes is in tribute to our proximity to the Andes Mountains, an area with unique climatic and agronomic conditions not found anywhere else in the world,” states Zetone.

The company grows different pear varieties that include William’s/Bartlett variety, which is known across the globe due to being the most demanded variety and is the one that have a “true” pear taste, its harvest starts in January. On the other hand, Packham’s Triumph is a generally large variety with a green skin that is harvested in February. The Beurre D´Anjou variety is a traditional French pear with green skin, with the harvest that starts at the end of January/early February. The Red Bartlett variety is a mutation of the William’s, but with a red skin that turns very bright when mature, with harvesting starting at the end of January/early February. “Along the year Fruit World is constantly oriented to enhance and safeguard the quality of its products and obtain a better fruit year after year. Our goal is to sell the best pears produced out of the High Valley of Rio Negro. We continuously work to improve our know-how, conservation processes and certifications with the aim to increase our client´s experience. We export 15 000 tons across the globe, 30% of our current markets is sent to Asia and the Middle East, 24% Europe, 40% LATAM and 6% to North America. North America and Asia are the markets we are interested in developing even further,” concluded Zetone.
