Health Care Fraud and Opioids

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners reported “In May, (2012) U.S. authorities charged 107 people — including doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals, for allegedly trying to defraud Medicare of about $452 million, the largest Medicare fraud sweep to date. “Health care fraud shows no sign of abating,” said Dr. Joseph T. Wells, CFE, CPA, founder and Chairman of the ACFE, during his recent keynote message at the 23rd Annual ACFE Fraud Conference & Exhibition.”

Jacqueline LaPointe of Recycle Intelligence reported, “June 28, 2018 – The HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and Department of Justice (DoJ) recently announced the largest healthcare fraud take down to date, with over 600 defendants charged with participating in fraud schemes amounting to about $2 billion in losses to Medicare and Medicaid.” Can you recognize health care fraud? Have you reported health care fraud? How do you think medical fraud has impacted COVID 19?
