HILLIARD, Ohio (WSYX) — Fall is in the air and deals are plentiful at Darby Creek Nursery.

The nursery specializes in late-blooming Belgium mums that don’t start cracking color for a couple of weeks. When November rolls around, you will still have big blooms on your mums through the fall season. The nursery planted twice as many mums this year than last, and Jeff Turnbull, the owner, said they will still likely sell out in the coming weeks. Fall is a great time for planting perennials as well as replanting grass seed. Turnbull said his cut-off on new grass though is October 15 for his nursery crews. Mums are perennials, but many plant them as annuals or in pots for seasonal bursts of color throughout the garden or landscaping. The following are a few things to consider when planting mums:

  • Sunlight - Chrysanthemums love the sun whether in a pot or garden. Mums will have better growth, bloom and hardiness in full sun conditions.

  • Watering Mums - Mums do not like to get dry. Water newly planted mums thoroughly so that they can establish a good root system. The soil should remain damp 6-8 inches down but take care not to overwater leaving it soggy.

  • Prepare Mums for Winter - Mulch up to 4 inches around the plants. Pinch dead blooms but leave branches intact. The mum will have a better chance of surviving winter temperatures if you wait to prune old stems until the spring.

What edible flowers can you grow in the fall? Where are you located? What is your gardening zone?
