Just as advancements in technology and social media have connected us in more ways than ever before, it’s also causing an increase in cyber crime cases in Jakarta. According to the Jakarta Police, 2015 is destined to be the year with the highest number of cyber crimes reported. “There have already been 690 cases up until August 2015,” said Jakarta Police Spokesman Mohammad Iqbal, as quoted by Tempo. That is already higher than the 541 cases reported in 2013. At this rate, it’s also set to surpass the 785 reported cases in 2014. One of the most common cyber crime cases involves financial fraud in the form of transactions with strangers in return for rewards that are too good to be true.

The police are also warning the public to be more careful when uploading personal items such as photos to social media, as they can be used in horrific schemes like selling babies online. “The perpetrators usually steal [baby photos] online,” said Hariyanto, head of the Cyber Crimes Sub-Directorate at the Jakarta Police.
