NORFOLK-On December 16, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced plans for an upcoming merger of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University, with the merger required to take place by July 2024.

The announcement was made as part of the governor’s amendments to the 2022-24 state budget, which must be passed by the General Assembly during the upcoming 2023 legislative session in January in order to take effect. The changes include $10 million for the creation and launch of the new Eastern Virginia Health Sciences Center at Old Dominion University, a merger of EVMS and ODU.

The funds will go toward one-time costs associated with initial planning and creation of the new center.
