Photo Source: Unsplash, Charles Deluvio During the pandemic many everyday Americans holding on to their job made major telecommuting shifts. All together we were all at home making it happen from school to work. Zoom calls saw a huge rise along with other telecommuting tools. During this time people also changed their home space to accommodate and bring at least part of the world into their home to both work, play and go to school. Fashion also made major changes as people ditched starched suits and work clothes for something more semi work wear. We wore more clothes that we would typically wear around the house with just enough of a business twist to keep up breezing through work during the pandemic. Now that we are moving past the pandemic people are transitioning back into my suitable outdoor and business wear. However, people are not wanting to give up the comfort they found at home. Seeking clothing that is professional, play and home comfortable approved. Consequently, knits and crochets have become Queen. Traditionally and historically knits and crochets have been Queen of Comfort and this post pandemic is not exception to that rule. - Prince Charles & Sustainable Clothing as well as the Environment
Source: USA Today Photo Source: Unsplash Prince Charles, long admired for his natty wardrobe, opens up to British Vogue in a new interview about his mantra of "Buy once, buy well." He hates to throw anything away, would rather get something repaired than replaced, and even wore a 36-year-old morning coat to son Prince Harry 's wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018. Where does the Prince of Wales' sense of style come from, editor-in-chief Edward Enninful asked him as the two chatted by Zoom link between Charles' Dumfries House in Scotland and Enninful's office at Vogue House in London . "I thought I was like a stopped clock – I’m right twice every 24 hours," Charles joked. "I’m very glad you think (the way I dress) has style. I mind about detail and color and things like that – and color combinations. I’m lucky because I can find marvelous people who are brilliant makers of the things that I appreciate, and because of that, I try to keep them going for longer." The interview features a picture of the prince standing in the lush gardens of his country home, Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, wearing a 30-year-old linen jacket made for him by Anderson & Sheppard, the venerable Saville Row bespoke tailor. Besides his style, Charles is famous for his disdain for waste, especially food waste, for his commitment to conservation and organic food production and for his prodigious charity work. Thus, the interview in the magazine's December issue, aimed at promoting his interests in sustainable fashion, including his new project The Modern Artisans, a textile training program to link Italian design students and students in Scotland to teach high-end fashion and sewing skills. Charles suggested his childhood summers at the royal family's Balmoral Castle in Scotland may have inspired him to resist disposable trends. "When I was a child, we used to take our shoes down to the cobbler in Scotland and would watch with fascination as he ripped the soles off and then put new soles on," Charles said. Charles argued that wardrobe maintenance offers opportunities for the growth of small businesses to repair, maintain and reuse clothing. "Which is one of the reasons I’ve tried here, at Dumfries House, to start a kind of thrift market for precisely that purpose, where you can bring things in – whether it’s electrical appliances or anything – to be mended," he said. COVID-19 may have allowed the locked-down world to heal a little, but it's not enough, Charles said. "The tragedy, as we’ve heard recently, is that despite that, and despite lockdown, the rate of global warming is still accelerating," he said. "And we still haven’t been able to tackle this issue, which is so utterly crucial if we’re to avoid total catastrophe. "We need to put nature back at the center of everything we do in a circular bio-economy...We can’t go on like this, but there are solutions, we just need to act – and now." - Vogue’s ultimate guide to sustainable fashion
BY Emily Chan April 19, 2021 Source: Vouge Photo Source: Unsplash, Pracila Du Preez What does sustainable fashion actually mean? And what are the eco-conscious brands to look out for? Here's everything you need to know Sustainable fashion is a term that’s increasingly used (and overused, often with little to back it up) these days, as we all become ever more aware of the serious environmental impact of our clothes —with the industry responsible for a shocking four to 10 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions every year. But what does sustainable fashion actually mean? In short, it’s an umbrella term for clothes that are created and consumed in a way that can be, quite literally, sustained, while protecting both the environment and those producing garments. That’s why cutting CO2 emissions, addressing overproduction, reducing pollution and waste, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring that garment workers are paid a fair wage and have safe working conditions, are all crucial to the sustainability matrix . Considering the number of factors involved, there are still too few brands out there currently tackling all of these complex issues, and even those that are will admit that there’s always room for improvement. This means simply shopping for items labelled ‘sustainable’ is not enough; we need to completely rethink our purchasing habits and the way we consume clothes. So, if you want to ensure your wardrobe is as sustainable as possible moving forward, here’s everything you need to know. 1. Buy less and buy better It may be a cliche, but the mantra “buy less and buy better” is key when you consider that a staggering 100bn garments are being produced globally every year. Before making a purchase, sustainability consultancy Eco-Age ’s chief brand officer Harriet Vocking advises that you ask yourself three all-important questions: “What are you buying and why? What do you really need? Will you wear it at least 30 times?” 2. Invest in sustainable fashion brands Buying better can also mean supporting designers who are promoting sustainable practices, including those who use upcycled textiles in their designs. 3. Avoid greenwashing As consumers become ever more aware of their environmental footprint, greenwashing—brands using vague, misleading or false claims to suggest it’s more eco-friendly than it actually is—is becoming increasingly prevalent. Look beyond buzzwords such as ‘sustainable’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘conscious’ and ‘responsible’ to see if brands have detailed policies to back up their claims. 4. Know your materials Understanding the impact of materials is crucial when it comes to making more sustainable purchases. A good rule of thumb is to avoid virgin synthetics such as polyester—which makes up 55 per cent of clothes globally—as these are derived from fossil fuels and take years to break down. Not all natural materials are made the same: organic cotton, for example, uses significantly less water than conventional cotton and doesn’t use harmful pesticides. 5. Ask who made your clothes With the pandemic highlighting the extreme difficulties faced by garment workers around the world, it’s essential that the people who make our clothes are paid a fair wage and have safe working conditions. Seek out brands who openly disclose information about their factories and their policies around wages and working conditions. 6. Watch out for harmful chemicals Hidden chemicals that are used to treat our clothes are a serious concern, polluting local waterways and posing a risk to garment workers. Keep an eye out for the Made in Green by OEKO-TEX and Bluesign certifications, which set out requirements for chemical usage during the manufacturing process. 7. Reduce your water footprint Given that the production of textile uses an astonishing 93bn cubic metres of water annually — the equivalent to 37m Olympic swimming pools—we should all be more conscious about the water footprint of our clothes. As mentioned previously, organic cotton uses significantly less water than conventional cotton (91 per cent less, according to one study ), while the use of low-water dyes also reduces water consumption. 8. Be conscious about vegan fashion While animal-derived materials such as leather and wool come with environmental and ethical concerns, vegan alternatives, which often contain synthetics, can also be harmful for our planet. Luckily, there are exciting innovations entering the market, such as Bolt Threads’ Mylo leather, made from mycelium—the roots of fungi—which has already been adopted by Stella McCartney . 9. Take care of your clothes Extending the life of your clothes is crucial when it comes to lowering the environmental footprint of your garments , and ensuring they don’t end up clogging landfill sites after just one or two wears. Ensure your clothes last as long as possible by not overwashing them (which will also lower your CO2 emissions and water consumption), as well as repairing them instead of throwing them out. 10. Avoid microplastic pollution As it’s difficult to avoid synthetics altogether (nylon and elastane are still required in activewear and underwear to get that all-important stretch), washing clothes can release thousands of microplastics into our waterways and oceans, causing harm to marine life that ingest the tiny particles. Luckily, there’s a simple solution: investing in a microplastics filter such as a Guppyfriend washing bag , in which you can put your synthetic garments or a Cora Ball that you put in with your laundry. 11. Ensure your clothes have a second life When clearing out your closet, being conscious about how you dispose of your clothes will help stop them from ending up in landfill. Re-selling your clothes or organising a clothes swap is the best way to ensure they’ll have a second life, as well as donating to charities and organisations that are looking for used clothing. For worn-out pieces that can no longer be repaired for reused, look for recycling schemes specifically for those items, where possible. How do you care for your clothes and give them more longevity? - What Makes Clothing Sustainable
Source: Money Crashers Photo Source: Unsplash, Henry Be What sets sustainable clothing apart from today’s cheap “fast fashion” is it’s both planet-friendly and worker-friendly. Sustainable clothes are also durable enough in most cases to last for many seasons. They’re often made from eco-friendly fabrics, which can include reused or recycled material. Most sustainable clothing companies pay their workers a fair wage and provide decent working conditions. Eco-Friendly Fibers Natural fabrics, such as cotton, aren’t always greener than synthetic fabrics like polyester. Conventional methods of growing cotton use vast amounts of fertilizer and pesticides, which are often highly toxic. It’s possible to grow cotton without these chemicals, but even organic cotton consumes large amounts of water. The greenest fabrics are made from renewable fibers that are easy to grow or produce. They require limited water and energy to produce, and many are recyclable. The environmental sites Go Climate Neutral and Trusted Clothes both offer detailed analyses of which fabrics are most eco-friendly. Their top choices include: Linen . Made from flax – which needs far less water, fertilizer, and pesticides than cotton – linen requires little energy to manufacture. It’s also easy to compost or recycle into paper. Hemp . Hemp also doesn’t need much fertilizer or pesticides. And, as the selection at Bulk Hemp Warehouse shows, it can be made into a wide variety of fabrics, such as canvas, denim, twill, jersey, and fleece. Hemp growing used to be illegal in many states, but the 2018 Farm Bill made it legal across the U.S. Bamboo . Bamboo has both pros and cons as a sustainable fiber. This fast-growing plant uses almost no pesticides. It produces soft fabrics that are easy to care for. However, turning its fibers into fabric often requires toxic chemicals. Lyocell . Commonly sold under the brand name Tencel, this fabric is made from wood pulp — typically eucalyptus wood, which grows quickly with little water and chemicals. Unlike rayon, another wood-based fabric, lyocell doesn’t produce a lot of pollution. As a bonus, the fabric is naturally wrinkle-resistant, so it’s easy to care for. Alpaca . A mammal native to Peru that looks similar to a llama, the alpaca has long hair that produces beautifully soft fibers. Alpacas are hardy creatures that don’t eat or drink much and can stay healthy without antibiotics. Alpaca wool is more eco-conscious than cashmere, which comes from a type of Asian goat. Heavy breeding of cashmere goats has led to severe overgrazing in Mongolia, slowly turning much of the country into desert. Organic Wool . Some sheep farms use toxic pesticides on their pastures or treat the animals with toxic dips. Organic sheep farms avoid these harmful chemicals. They keep both the sheep and pastures healthy by using the animals’ manure to nourish the soil. Silk . Produced by caterpillars known as silkworms, this natural fabric is lightweight and durable. At the end of its life, it breaks down naturally. Commonly used for evening wear, it also makes surprisingly warm thermal underwear. Many ethical vegetarians avoid silk because producing it usually involves killing the silkworms. However, peace silk, also known as vegan silk, is a cruelty-free alternative. In addition to fiber choice, our clothing and accessories are designed with longevity in mind unlike more disposable ready to wear clothing not made to last. Keeping clothing in the wear cycle longer than disposable or most ready to wear puts these items in the disposable arena much faster than clothing made to be worn over time. - Oscars fashion trends: midriffs and statement tuxedos catch up with Gen Z style
Gold stars … nominees Carey Mulligan, Leslie Odom Jr and Andra Day on the red carpet at Union Station, Los Angeles. Photograph: Chris Pizzello/AP On the red carpet, cleavage gave way to abs for Hollywood’s women, while men’s suits stole the show with colour and variety Jess Cartner-Morley @JessC_M Mon 26 Apr 2021 02.35 EDT Source: The Guardian Photos Source: The Guardian The dresses at the 2021 Oscars confirmed what a walk through any park or beer garden this weekend would have told you: for the younger generation, a cantilevered cleavage has been replaced by a flash of bare midriff as the key signifier of party dressing. For Generation Z, a plunging neckline is what mums wear in date-night photos they post on Facebook. A crop top above high waisted jeans, to show a few inches of skin, or a dress with a shark-bite sized cut out to show some side-ab, is a more modern way to power (party) dress. Carey Mulligan’s gold sequins showcased two ribs between a vast skirt and a tiny boob tube. (Mulligan chose to leave the matching face mask with which the look was accessorised when it starred on the Valentino haute couture catwalk in January at home.) Andra Day, fellow best actress nominee for her portrayal of Billie Holiday, also wore gold sequins with an emphasis on abdomen. “There’s cut-outs, leg, peekaboo – it’s a scandal,” Day’s stylist Wouri Vice told Vogue. The dress was inspired by Bob Mackie’s daring 1980s Oscar gowns for Cher, created by Vera Wang – and engineered with the aid of a welder. Zendaya’s sunshine yellow Valentino was bikini on top, ballgown below; Vanessa Kirby’s pale pink Gucci had a delicate half moon gap above the waistband. When fortunes are made by high-kicking action roles, perhaps it makes sense that dresses that show off boxer abs are edging out the meringue prom aesthetic In an era when Hollywood fortunes are made by high-kicking roles in all-action blockbusters, rather than by nailing the America’s sweetheart role, perhaps it makes sense that dresses that show off boxer abs are edging out the meringue-adjacent, prom-princess aesthetic. As far as body positivity in popular culture goes, however, the power side-ab is at best a sideways move. Time was that red carpet fashion was about women, with menswear relegated to a final paragraph referencing the odd novelty bow tie. Not any more. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung commissioned the Asian American brand Goodfight to make his shawl-collar tux with pocket-chain detailing, which he teamed with yellow-stitched Dr Martens; his nine-year-old star, Alan Kim, was dressed in tailored shorts by menswear supremo Thom Browne. Colman Domingo of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom wore a fuchsia three-piece Versace suit with a matching shirt, while his co-star Daniel Kaluuya wore a double-breasted Bottega Veneta tuxedo with a necklace of Cartier diamonds so large and bright they looked like a string of pearls. Leslie Odom Jr wore a gold shirt to match his gold Brioni suit. The strongest political statement on the red carpet also came from tuxedos. Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, the directors of Two Distant Strangers, stopped on the red carpet to open their jackets and display the linings, on which the names of 17 black Americans killed by police were embroidered in yellow. When the directors’ stylist, Tara Swennen, approached Dolce & Gabbana with the idea, the designers “were over the moon and said yes immediately,” she said. The 17th name was that of Daunte Wright, fatally shot on 11 April. “I don’t know how they did it but they were able to fit his name in as well at the last minute, which meant a lot,” said Free. The aesthetic of Nomadland, which dominated the night, is sumptuous to look at while rigorously anti-glamour. The film is bathed in natural light, finding beauty in rugged landscapes and bare faces. Fittingly, director Chloé Zhao collected her Oscar wearing white sneakers with her understated oyster-toned Hermes dress, and wore her hair in plaits rather than a Hollywood blow-dry; Frances McDormand wore long sleeved black, stark and simple but for the feathers at the cuffs. A non-traditional Oscars night made room for more non-traditional gowns. Olivia Colman looked chic in ketchup-red Christian Dior with long bell sleeves and a high funnel collar. Emerald Fennell wore chunky signet rings with her Gucci kaftan, and told reporters that “tonight I am Susan, your pottery teacher who has a business opportunity for you which is absolutely not a pyramid scheme”. Not a typical Oscar look – but then, this was hardly a typical Oscar night. How will you put a little sparkle in your wardrobe? Where do you like to wear your sparkle? Why?
