The welterweight division is consolidating. The WBA have approved a fight between their champion Yordenis Ugas and unified champion Errol Spence Jr.
The bout is now expected to take place in early 2022, which sees Ugas put his WBA strap and Spence his IBF and WBC belts on the line.
Cuban fighter Ugas won a surprise victory over Manny Pacquiao this summer, claiming the WBA belt in the process. He was a late replacement for Spence, who had to drop out of the event when he required eye surgery.

The WBA had caused Ugas some distress as they originally wanted him to fight Eimantas Stanionis in a mandatory defense, but now the Lithuanian is willing to let the Ugas-Spence bout go ahead. Stanionis will instead fight Radzhab Butaev, with the winner then able to fight the winner of the unification clash. The WBA president Gilberton Mendoza confirmed the news on Twitter. Once the fights are resolved, it leaves just Terence Crawford’s WBO belt outstanding, meaning 2022 could potentially see an undisputed 147lb champion be crowned.
