Teofimo Lopez believes Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) will have his hand raised this Saturday night May 28th, in his bout against WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on Showtime Championship Boxing. Teofimo thinks that Gervonta (26-0, 24 KOs) doesn’t have the same love for the sport as the 26-year-old Rolly does, and that will be shown inside the ring on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The lack of devotion for Tank will hurt him when it comes to putting out the effort that he needs for him to win the fight. Though we haven’t seen Gervonta lose to anyone, he’s looked vulnerable in recent fights against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, Leo Santa Cruz, and Mario Barrios. If Tank loses this fight, it will be a massive blow to his career because he’s a big betting favorite. Whether Rolly chooses to give him an immediate rematch remains to be seen. “I know boxing. Rolando Romero may not have the technical parts of it, but he has what it takes to beat Tank Davis,” said Teofimo Lopez to Fight Hub TV.
“He don’t respect him, and he’ll come to him, and he’ll give him everything that he got. That right there, along with the skillsets that they’re doing with Rolly, because he actually is getting better.
“I’m not saying that because I know him. Tank can be a force to be reckoned with, and he doesn’t have an obsession with this,” said Teofimo. “He just does it because he has to, not because he wants to.” Teddy Atlas believes that Rolly should have a loss on his record from his fight against Jackson Marinez in August 2020. The judges gave Rolly a 12-round unanimous decision, but Atlas believes Marinez deserved the win.
Many fans had Rolly winning by a comprehensive 118-110 score because the difference between his vast power and the weak shots Marinez was hitting him was significant. “Romero is not really undefeated. He’s 13-1 and not 14-0,” said Teddy Atlas on The Fight. “I know he’s 14-0, but he should be 13-1 because of [Jackson] Marinez. “Three fights ago, Romero lost to Marinez in a 12-round fight,” continued Atlas. “I watched it, and I think I know what I was watching.
“The commentators built him up to the high heavens, built up Romero, and he was signed with Floyd Mayweather, and he was a real good amateur. He had 140 amateur fights, and they were building him up like he was the next great prospect and beyond prospect. “He was going to be the next great sensation, and I’m not exaggerating. That’s the way they built him up and the fanfare that they gave him. “This poor kid, who was also undefeated. This poor kid from the Dominican Republic, Jackson Marinez, you hardly knew he was in the ring. You wouldn’t know it [that Marinez was undefeated] by the attention he was given or wasn’t given. You would have no idea,” said Atlas.
