Gervonta Davis apparently isn’t so keen on having his most supportive contingent ringside for his showdown with Ryan Garcia.
The hard-hitting southpaw from Baltimore suggested in a recent interview that he prefers that members of his family, including his mother, stay home on the night of April 22 when he takes on Victorville, California’s Garcia in a 136-pound bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
Davis’ mother, Kenya Brown, is a familiar face at many of her son’s fights, often seen cheering exuberantly. But in a recent interview Davis implied that his mother might be better served staying at home because of the “war” he expects to have with Garcia.
Although Davis has at times written off Garcia as an inflated social media product not worthy of getting in the ring with him, he has also made it clear in other times that he views Garcia as a formidable opponent.
“No. I don’t think so,” Davis said of bringing his family to the Garcia fight in an interview with Complex. “No, I won’t bring them there. It may be[come a war]. It may get there. It’s more so the kids and the woman at home [that won’t come to the fight].
“Even my mom has got to stay home. My mom, she’s, like, tough, but, nah. …Nah, it can get ugly—on both sides. This is a 50-50 fight. So, I got to lock all the way in.”
Davis, 28, and Garcia, 24, represent two of the biggest stars of their sport, and their fight was consummated only after much back and forth in negotiations between their respective teams. Davis is backed by Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, while Garcia is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy.
Davis is considered by most bookmakers to be the odds-favorite.
Davis last fought in January, a ninth-round knockout of Hector Luis Garcia at Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C.
Garcia has not fought since last July, when he stopped Javier Fortuna in six rounds.
