Gervonta “Tank” Davis tossed a grenade on Twitter on Saturday alleging that Ryan Garcia is “definitely on something” in response to a picture of a clothed Garcia embracing super welterweight Tim Tszyu.
“No funny sh!t. If I find out he's cheating, it's going to be a problem and it's going to be more than boxing problems. He never looked that big before. He's definitely on something. Sh!t DAZN already proved they don't care about testing."
Garcia responded on Twitter soon after saying: “Spooked … I don’t even take supplements.” Davis referring to DAZN not caring about testing is in reference to the fiasco involving Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. in October when Benn failed a drug test yet was still pushing for the match to be staged during fight week. Ultimately, the bout was canceled 48 hours before the show.
“Why didn't they ban Eddie Hearn for still trying to have fights after he knew a fighter was cheating and still tried to continue with a boxing match," said Davis. “I'm waiting. Y'all quiet on this sh!t”
Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) and Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) have agreed to terms to meet for a pay-per-view fight in 2023 that will be handled by Showtime’s broadcast and production teams. The event can be purchased on DAZN, but it’s not a joint PPV venture. The bout will take place at a catchweight of 136 pounds.
Garcia has weighed 140 pounds (KO6, Javier Fortuna), 138 1/4 pounds (UD win, Emmanuel Tagoe), and 135 pounds (KO7, Luke Campbell) in his last three fights dating back to January 2021. Garcia planned on continuing his career at 140 pounds but agreed to meet Davis at a lighter weight in order for the super fight to be made.
Davis has also fought at 140 pounds before, but he’s weighed in below the 135-pound limit in each of his last two fights.
Davis will be fighting Hector Luis Garcia on Jan. 7. Garcia plans to return to the ring in January as well.
