Ryan Garcia announced on Saturday that he’ll take a tune-up fight in January like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to get ready for their mega-fight on April 15th. With the huge money at stake for his April fight, Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) won’t likely take on a high-caliber opponent that could potentially sink his clash with Tank Davis.

As many boxing fans know, Ryan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions have taken it VERY easy with him, matching him with mostly moderate-level opposition his entire six-year professional career.

It’s fair to say that Golden Boy has similarly matched Ryan as Jaime Munguia, keeping him well-protected from the lions in the 135-lb division. Perhaps the best name on Ryan’s resume was 35-year-old Luke Campbell, who had already been softened up by Vasily Lomachenko by the time Kingry faced him.

It would be nice if Ryan were to take on a good opponent for his tune-up bout in January because Tank has chosen an excellent tune-up opponent in Hector Luis Garcia.

If Ryan chooses a lesser opponent for his warm-up fight, he will look like the well-protected social media fighter many boxing fans view him as.
