Mbilli Anticipates ‘Easy Win’ For Canelo Against Munguia

April 28, 2024

Super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli has previously told BoxingScene that Saul Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed title defense with Jaime Munguia is an “easy fight”.

Canelo’s showdown with fellow Mexican Munguia hits the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on  May 4 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

“I think Munguia will need to use a lot of pressure,” Mbilli responded to how Munguia could beat Canelo. “He will need a really good defense, he’ll have to stay focused and move his head the whole fight. I hope he has good conditioning. That’s it, that’s all he can do.”

Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will make a fourth consecutive defense of his four-belts against Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), a former 154 pound champion, who has his third straight fight at super middleweight.

Canelo scored a wide unanimous-decision win over Jermell Charlo last September in Las Vegas. Munguia’s last ring appearance saw him claim a ninth-round stoppage against John Ryder in January.

“He doesn’t have a very good chin,” Mbilli added of Munguia. “He doesn’t like pressure and I don’t think he can take a punch that well. I think Canelo can knock him out if he wants to, but I think Canelo is having some trouble to stop any boxer. Look at his last three fights, he had a lot of trouble.

“So I don’t know if Canelo can stop him because he’s on the way down. I still think it will be quite an easy fight for Canelo. He’s the better fighter. He should knock him out. But it will be a very easy win for Canelo if he doest knock him out.”

Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) is ranked within the top four for all of Canelo’s titles. The Frenchman takes on England’s Mark Heffron in Shawinigan, Canada on May 25.
