Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are set to make history in the first ever women's bout to headline Madison Square Garden... as the two leading pound-for-pound stars confirm their mega-fight will finally take place on April 30 at the famous sporting venue


Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have confirmed they will finally go head to head in a groundbreaking event for women's boxing at Madison Square Garden on April 30. A mega-fight between Taylor, the current undisputed lightweight champion, and Serrano, a former world-titlist in seven weight divisions, has been mooted for a number of years. The pair, universally considered the top two female fighters on the planet right now, were set to battle it out for pound-for-pound supremacy back in 2020, only for their proposed showdown to fall through due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taylor vs Serrano will be the first ever women's bout to headline a card at MSG - the iconic fight venue which has staged countless high-profile contests over the last 140 years. Ireland's Taylor, who has won all 20 of her professional outings to date, said after sealing her clash with Serrano: 'This is a fight I've wanted for a long, long time and I'm just excited for it to finally take place because these are the kind of fights I'm in the sport for.

'When I turned professional my goal was to be involved in huge events like this so to headline at Madison Square Garden in a fight of this magnitude is really the pinnacle of the sport. 'It's such an iconic venue and has been home to so many of the historic moments in boxing and I truly believe this will be another one.' Serrano, the Puerto Rican star boasting a record of 42-1-1, is also delighted to be headlining at such a historic arena.

Katie was born on July 2, 1986, in Wicklow, Ireland. She began boxing at age 12 when her dad, Pete, started training her and her two brothers at a local clubSerrano, meanwhile, is a seven-weight world champion enjoying 28 wins on the bounce'It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do so against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor,' she said.

'Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I have dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute.

'On April 30th I am going to make history for me, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino and for all women worldwide.'

Both women head into their date of destiny on an impressive run of form, with Taylor winning all of her contests to date and picking up wins over Natasha Jonas, Jennifer Han and Firuza Sharipova in 2021.

As for Serrano, she has avoided defeat over the past decade and is currently enjoying a 28-fight winning streak.
