Hamzah Sheeraz is days away from his first world title fight, days from taking on a level of opponent he’s never faced before. But the middleweight contender seems composed, confident and ready for whatever WBC titleholder Carlos Adames brings into the ring this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“He’s a world champion for a reason. But to be a great in this sport, you got to do great things, and Saturday night is my chance to do that,” Sheeraz said in an interview with BoxNation. “I’ve put all the hours in, the extra sparring, the extra miles in camp. That’s why I’m more kind of calm and relaxed going into it, because I know in this camp, I’ve done everything and more asked of me.”
Sheeraz, a 25-year-old from England, is 21-0 (17 KOs). He’s moved up the rankings and earned recognition as the top challenger in an otherwise shallow 160lbs division. Sheeraz has scored 15 consecutive knockouts, with recent victories over Liam Williams (TKO1), Austin “Ammo” Williams (TKO11) and Tyler Denny (TKO2).
Adames, 24-1 (18 KOs), is a 30-year-old who originally hails from the Dominican Republic and now calls Las Vegas home. His only loss came via unanimous decision to Patrick Teixeira at junior middleweight in 2019. Since then, Adames has notched six straight victories, including wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko (MD10), Julian Williams (TKO9) and Terrell Gausha (UD12).
Sheeraz, listed at 6ft 3ins, is four inches taller than the 5ft 11ins Adames, something that Sheeraz feels will come into play with how the fight plays out.
“He’s strong. He’s aggressive. He can switch hit. He does a bit of everything,” Sheeraz said. “He can box as well. But I think common sense, just against me, he’s not going to box because of my height and reach, so he’s going to be aggressive, he’s going to try and break me down. There’s nothing we’ve not prepared for. I’m just here, ready, quietly confident and just raring to go, ready for my opportunity.”
Sheeraz predicts that he will extend his knockout streak to 16 while winning his first world title.
“I truly believe I can stop him,” he said. “I’m not going to go looking for it, because I never do, but I think if i do what we’ve been doing in camp, if I stick that ramrod jab and just keep it going, I can inflict some serious damage. But then again, if we’ve got to get messy, then we’ll get messy, just like I did in the Ammo Williams fight. If I have to stand there, take a few to give a few, it’s not ideal but it is what it is. Boxing, you can’t swim without getting wet.”
