Pounding away at the heavy bag until it screams no mas and working meticulously on his craft with head trainer Calvin Ford, isn’t quite enough for Gervonta Davis. For the 28-year-old knockout puncher from Baltimore, Maryland, he’s always believed that in order to ensure that his future was bright, he needed to study the past.
Though he revere’s many of the game's former greats, he consistently gravitated toward the impeccable style and record of Floyd Mayweather. Throughout the course of a career that spanned more than two decades, Mayweather effortlessly discarded his foe's feeble attempts to sully his record. Although the recently inducted Hall of Famer hasn’t officially stepped foot in the ring on the professional level for well over five years, Davis often finds himself searching online for some of his game tapes.
Once he finds what he’s looking for, Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) grabs a comfortable seat in his palatial estate and begins to take notes. On the surface, the two couldn’t be more diametrically opposed in terms of their fighting style. However, during a recent discussion, Davis revealed that he isn’t necessarily looking to emulate Mayweather. Instead, he’s simply attempting to add a few subtle layers to his own overall game. “Just little stuff,” said Davis to ShowTime when asked what exactly he's looking for when he watches old film of Mayweather. “Just like how he’s moving, like his hand placement. Like where he’s throwing at and things like that. Just like how he is in the boxing ring.”
In just a few short days, boxing’s spotlight will be shining brightly on Davis, something he’s grown accustomed to. This upcoming weekend, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Davis and Ryan Garcia will look to put their rivalry to bed when they meet up in the main event slot in front of a jam-packed crowd.
Prior to inking his name on the dotted line, Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) successfully rankled Davis by perpetually goading the 28-year-old in the public eye. Now, with their showdown rapidly arriving, Davis reveals that during preparation, he made sure to pop in more tape of Mayweather to study his every move.
Although Davis has a plethora of all-time greats to choose from, there’s no one he would rather dissect more than Mayweather. From Davis’ point of view, while there’s been a number of terrific fighters that have painted their picture in that squared circle, no one can compare to Mayweather and what he’s accomplished.
“I like to try and watch him a lot. I always like to watch Floyd because I think he’s the best, like the greatest of all time for sure.”
