Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says he wants the Jermall Charlo vs. Jaime Munguia fight, but he needs Showtime to agree to let DAZN share the broadcast of the battle. Showtime wants to be the sole broadcaster of the Charlo-Munguia fight on pay-per-view, but De La Hoya says DAZN needs to be able to show the war as well.
DAZN built Munguia’s brand by showing his fights on their platform, so they naturally don’t want to be locked out of the most crucial battle of his nine-year professional career.
Unless Showtime agrees to let DAZN share in the broadcast of the Charlo vs. Munguia fight, it’s not going to happen. You can understand DAZN’s perspective in wanting to share in the broadcast of the match because there’s a high chance that Munguia (39-0, 31 KOs) will lose. Munguia hasn’t pleased the hardcore boxing fans in 2022 by rejecting a title shot against WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade and recently turning down a title eliminator against Zhanibek Alimkhanuly.
The 25-year-old Munguia is ranked #1 with the WBC and WBO, but he’s failed to take advantage of that high ranking.
Boxing fans believe that Munguia is holding out to eventually face IBF 160-lb champion Gennadiy Golovkin in either late 2022 or early 2023.
“Jaime Munguia vs. Charlo, listen, we want the fight obviously, and Charlo is the champion; he gets the bigger cut. We all know that; that’s common sense,” said Oscar De La Hoya on Twitter. “Showtime, yes. You have the fight on Showtime pay-per-view, but I need DAZN to participate. They built Jaime Munguia; that’s only fair. It’s business. “More platforms, more pay-per-view, and more money for the fighters. What’s wrong with that?” said De La Hoya.
Well, it doesn’t look like Showtime will change their mind about not wanting to share the broadcast for the Munguia vs. Charlo fight with DAZN.
With a big-money match over the horizon in 2023 between Charlo and Canelo Alvarez, it’s understandable why Showtime doesn’t want to share Charlo-Munguia fight with DAZN. They don’t need to.
Besides, it’s a risky fight for Charlo and not a good idea for Showtime for that match to occur. If Charlo loses to Munguia, Showtime can forget about a battle between Jermall and Canelo in 2023.
WBC middleweight champion Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) looked terrible in his last fight against Juan Macias Montiel (23-5-2, 23 KOs) last June, getting hurt multiple times by the heavy-handed Mexican puncher in their contest in Houston.
Some believe that the 32-year-old Charlo isn’t living the life at this point in his 14-year career, partying too much in between fights, enjoying the many millions that he’s made. Some believe that Charlo is no longer mentally focused on the sport.
If it’s true that Jermall is going through the motions at this stage in his career, it’s better for Showtime that he NOT fight Munguia because he’ll lose to him, and that’ll wreck their plans for a big Canelo match in 2023. “Vergil Ortiz vs. McKinson, fight week, we can’t wait. At the Galen Center, live on DAZN. It’s going to be a great fight,” said De la Hoya about this Saturday’s on March 19th on DAZN between unbeaten welterweight contenders Vergil Ortiz and Michael McKinson in Los Angeles.
Vergil Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) will likely destroy the light-hitting McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs) this Saturday night. It’s too bad a better fight than this couldn’t have been made by Golden Boy for the main event on DAZN.
“Ryan Garcia, April 9th, his big return,” said De La Hoya about King Ry’s comeback fight against Emmanuel Targoe (32-1, 15 KOs) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. “Tickets are almost sold out in San Antonio. It’s going to be a great fight,” said De La Hoya.
