Cuban junior welterweight Kevin Brown is trying to do the impossible and make an ordinary name extraordinary.
Brown boxes Idalberto Umara on Friday (May 30) at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, Florida, in a bout that will be telecast on DAZN.
Brown (4-0, 3 KOs) is a decorated Cuban amateur who is being fast-tracked as a pro and his first test is facing 23-year-old compatriot, Umara (12-2, 8 KOs).
“I know he is a fellow countryman from Cuba, so he is well trained from his youth, and he brings a lot of skill to the ring,” said Brown. “I’m in the business of [knocking out] my opponents, and this fight won’t be any different.”
Brown, 30, trains in Las Vegas with Ismael Salas, who has had an assortment of top contenders. Most notably, Salas helped Brian Mendoza pull off a massive upset over Sebastian Fundora last year. In the past, Salas has worked with Jorge Linares, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Yordenis Ugas.
“Coach Salas and I have put a lot of hard work in, and it will show on fight night,” said Brown. “I’m in the best shape of my life, and I’m getting the proper sparring to be ready for this fight.”
One way for the man known as “Downtown” Brown to stand out would be to win a world title – something he feels is already within his reach. He has fought in 10-round fights in his last three bouts and turned pro in an eight-rounder. He holds a notable win over Julian Smith, known as “The Quiet Storm,” a deaf boxer who is a fan favorite and who upset Orestes Velazquez in February with a ninth-round technical knockout. Brown is looking to stay active to improve his world-ranking.
“I’m ready to take on all contenders, and hopefully I’ll be in a position to fight for a world title in 2025,” said Brown. “Many doors will open with a victory against Umara. Winning these types of fights will help me climb up the rankings faster. I only want to fight the best possible opponents, and this is a great opportunity to show the world what I’m made of.”
